Then I sent him the track for the song Same Page and that is when I knew that he definitely destined to be a star. Same Page was a phenomenal record. At the same time I was having issues with my current label and decided to leave and start Kasino Brown Music. I continued to talk with J Gist about the records and eventually I signed him to the label. In 2009, we released R&B Gangster and it gained modest acclaim.

J Gist is not only an artist, but also a talented producer and musician. He continues to be a pillar of Kasino Brown Music and is currently in the studio recording his sophomore album. Ladies and gentlemen…I give you: J Gist.

Over the years, while working with countless individuals, I have been privy to stories about the industry meant to inspire or warn me, but it always amazed me when someone just starting out in the industry had something to share about a subject they had no experience in. For example, I was in the studio once recording a demo for someone (whom will remain nameless) and they stopped in the middle of the session and proceeded to tell me what I needed to do to win a Grammy. Wait a minute! Timeout! I could have understood this coming someone that either had several Grammy’s themselves or even nominations; but this was coming from someone that wanted to demo recorded to pursue a record deal (a record deal that never came by the way).

This is why it is important to be able to recognize wise counsel when you receive it. The industry is full of “know it alls” and those that think they got it figured out. The music industry is not science and most of the time what works for one, does not work anyone else. You are going to have to get a pioneer mind and you are going to have to go “when no man (or woman) has gone before. (I am sorry; couldn’t help myself.)

Every wise man has an even wiser man from whom they gain counsel.

So, I am very pleased to announce that I will be releasing PRIVATE THOUGHTS exclusively on iTunes September 4, 2012. This project has been a long time coming. The album will include all the original recordings of the songs as well as revised recordings as bonus tracks.

I would like to thank all those fans that continued to support this project. It has definitely been a labor of love and I am looking forward to sharing my PRIVATE THOUGHTS with you.

Successful and healthy alliances are those that both party’s can benefit from. Steer clear of one-sided alliances where some ends up losing out. You could end up losing a lot more than money; reputation is hot commodity as well.

I do this a lot when I am listening to music and I found that I apply some of the same elements to my music. I am a student of not only the music business, but of music itself. It has been times where I pull up the hottest song out at the time and listen to those elements like the way the the drum pattern is constructed or just the over all “pulse” of the song to attempt to capture that same energy.

I picked up this habit from a Grammy award winning producer. We would be in the studio and the first thing he would do is go to the DJ turntables and play some vinyl. He wouldn’t always sample the song, but he would capture the “pulse” of the record; the energy and then start producing a new record based on that “pulse.”

I thought that sharing this would hopefully inspire you to seek out those same “pulses” and energies and maybe capture them in your music. You might be surprised at what you come up with.
